G’day Bushcare friends,
Results of 2013 Event.
This year we had more than 132 groups registered, which was up from 97 last year. We reached 7 states, with only the NT not participating. Of the 132+ groups, 69 were from NSW – to be expected because that’s where we started and Mandy Wilson, a bushland officer at Willoughby Council, has tirelessly promoted the day to other land managers.
Most groups sent in a report about how their day went, with an overwhelming majority reporting good attendances and really enjoyable days. Some groups did particularly well in attracting new volunteers. It seems that the earlier the site is registered and the more it is publicised the more likely it is to recruit new volunteers. Quite a few groups used the event as an opportunity to promote bushcare locally.
The groups whose day combined various activities such as guided bushwalks, habitat construction, bush photography, with weeding, brought in more new people.
New State champions.
While the committee promotes Bushcare’s Major Day Out (BMDO) whenever possible, we are bringing on board some state champions. Like Mandy Wilson in NSW, they are keen supporters of BMDO and work as Land Managers. So far we have Saraya Robinson in Queensland and Joslyn van der Moolen and Anna Van Dugteren in the ACT. Saraya is also joining the committee, bringing an enthusiasm for social media to Bushcare’s Major Day Out.
Landcare Australia continues to provide support for us, and next year as part of Landcare Australia’s 25th Anniversary, Bushcare’s Major Day Out (BMDO) will again be occurring in Landcare Week.
Landcare Australia has given BMDO a generous donation. Additionally, BMDO will receive a great deal of help with publicity, including ongoing support and advice from the Landcare publicity department and, we are hoping, advertising for the event in the major newspapers. So the message for next year will be register early to take advantage of publicity opportunities.
The date for 2014.
Bushcare’s Major Day Out normally occurs on the Sunday of Landcare week, which happily has always been the second Sunday – but not in 2014. This year it is scheduled for Sunday 7th September, which is Father’s Day. We are going to go ahead with this date but as usual we are completely flexible with dates – if you prefer you can have yours on the Saturday or the week after. We are planning to have a media launch the week before the big day, targeting politicians and celebrities to help the cause.
Canon awards Prize.
This year Bushcare’s Major Day Out (BMDO) won a Community environmental prize of some great camera equipment. BMDO has been advised by the publicity arm of Canon that they would like us to do a series of interviews with local radio stations and newspapers. This has the potential to be a major breakthrough for the BMDO event with local media.
It’s all Care.
We want Bushcare to be inclusive. It doesn’t matter if you are Coastcare, Beachcare, Dunecare, River & Wetland Care or Landcare. In future our publicity will reflect the diversity of names that people do their wonderful work under, and remind people that really we all care!
Registering in 2014.
Registering will be possible from the 1st January, 2014. Remember, registering early is likely to attract more new volunteers.
We have friends in the media, such as Macca on ABC Radio, who want to help promote Bushcare’s Major Day Out. We want Bushcare, in all its guises, to be considered a great way for Australians to volunteer and help care for the local environment and we believe we are really well set for 2014.
Thanks for your support and have a happy Christmas and New Year.
Don Wilson and the Bushcare’s Major Day Out Committee.
