About the big day

On Sunday September 8th 2013 in Landcare Week, at over 100 city and country locations across Australia, everyone is invited to gather and do their bit for our remaining bushland.

Bushcare’s Major Day Out is a day specifically designed to give of us the opportunity to find out what is being done and what can be done in our own neighbourhood. It’s a fun day where anyone, young and old can work alongside and learn from experts and experienced volunteers. There are a range of activities depending on the location; walks, planting, weed removal, photography workshops as well as native plant identification and well celebrated morning teas.

Bushcare’s Major Day Out is a national event sponsored by Landcare Australia and Willoughby City Council. Feel free to play this short promotional video or share it with friends.

Started by Willoughby resident Don Wilson, a dedicated bushcare volunteer, Don found that Bushcare was not only an a great way to care for bushland, it was enjoyable, social and of great educational value. Don started organising yearly get togethers for his local council area and it grew exponentially from there.

Just as Clean Up Australia Day has made us a litter conscious nation, Bushcare’s Major Day Out aims to celebrate our concern and love for the bush while learning about the role we can all play in its continued care.

Since the 1970′s, when the Bradley Sister’s, Joan – a scientist and Eileen, proposed the principles of Bush Regeneration thousands of volunteers and trained Bush Regenerators have helped regenerate the bush, tipping the balance back in the favour of our native species. For example, volunteers such as retirees up and down the coast of New South Wales have helped transform our coastal sand dunes from invaded Bitou Bush landscapes to ones that now more closely resemble the past. We can make a difference, Bushcare’s Major Day Out is a means by which we can find out how.
